What if you only had 3 years?

I’m not saying you have just been given 3 years to live. Or even that you have some impending doom that gives you this crazy deadline. I am asking that if you only had 3 years to ____________ what would you do every day until then?

I pondered this question after our church service yesterday when our pastor wrapped up 2 amazing years of teaching in Matthew with the last 3 verses. For the first time, it hit me – Jesus had 3 years to prepare the world for those last 3 verses. Only 3 years. To prepare the whole world for eternity. Just 3 short years.

This post is not to preach to you. If you have been following my blog for sometime, you already know that I am pretty open about my faith in Christ. If you are interested to read more about that, just click here. But that is not what this post is about – it’s just a fact that my faith has a great deal of influence in my daily life.

So, if you only had 3 years to fill in the blank, how would you proceed every single day until then?

I wonder if I would care about the millions of details that trip up every day of my life. If I only have 3 years to ____, that would be a lot of wasted energy.

If I had only 3 years to parent my children, what would be the most important things I would want to teach them/tell them/show them? Would I want to say anything at all, or maybe I would just hug them for 3 straight years and never let go?

What if I had 3 years left in my marriage? Suddenly the dirty clothes on the floor seem so incredibly meaningless. I feel like I might just leave them there, or just pick them up myself so I could spend more time holding my husband’s hand.

How would I conduct myself in relationships?  Would I spend my time worried about how others are behaving? Would any of that even matter?

3 years to convince someone how much I love them, how would I show them?

If I had only 3 years to earn a living, what would I be willing to do?

And if I had an important job to do, and only 3 years to do it, how ferociously would I pursue it?

Luckily – hopefully – we are not up against a 3 year deadline. But maybe we should always consider ourselves to be.

This is a cell phone picture of my son from last week. We were walking to his friends house so he could have a play date. This is how HE pursues things, like his friendships. Running towards them as if it’s the last time he will see them. He didn’t care that he just saw his friend 30 minutes ago in school, or even that he will see his friend tomorrow in class again. He was running towards his friend’s house. So excited to see him right now.

I want to have the kind of attitude that I feel like I need to run towards anything because of right now. Not because I might have a lifetime to worry about it. What would I do every day until then, if I only had 3 years? Would I run as fast as I could towards it?

What about your business? What if you only had 3 years to start, plan and financially stabilize your business? What goals would you set? What plans would you make?

If a newborn baby can learn how to eat, walk, talk and become totally independent in 3 years, imagine what you could do with your 3 years, starting right now.
