The Intimate Story of Family – The Individual Portrait Session

The Intimate Story of Family – The Individual Portrait Session by East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer Angelsea Urban

~

Last week I announced HERE that I would be concentrating the efforts of my photography portraits to focus on Family. Since then I’ve gotten a few questions and concerns that I will only be accepting sessions of the family with 2 parents, 2.5 kids and the family retriever. (Ok maybe it wasn’t exactly worded that way, but that is the general concern.)

This could not be further from the truth and I’m grateful for the opportunity to elaborate as this new program rolls out.

Not every family looks like that. In fact, most of them don’t.

 ~

Family is…

A couple … committing their lives to each other

A daughter … a child or grown adult

A son … a child or grown adult

A mother … or a mother with her child or children

A mother in waiting … in anticipation of her new child

A  father … or a father with his child or children

A nuclear family … married parents with their children and maybe even the dog

A grandparent …. alone or with their own families or spouses

Sisters … just the girls or grown women

Brothers … just the boys or grown women

Siblings … just the kids or just the grown up adult siblings

Extended Families … the grandparents, the adult children and their children

Families by Choice: Best friends or honorary Uncles or Aunties with those they hold near and dear

And on and on the list would go….

 ~

The Family Portrait Experience does not have to mean that you and your 37 relatives have to dress up in matching clothes and smile for the camera.

I believe that the Family Portrait Experience should offer up a much more meaningful experience for your family as you make these memories together.

I believe that the Family Portrait Experience should be enabling you to nourish your relationships with each other in this process.

I believe that the portraits you will cherish for generations should not only reflect this experience, but enable you to cherish the relationships.

~

Below are a few images from a portrait session with the lovely Ms. Kennedy. Kennedy is a prime example of celebrating her individuality as a unique person, but also celebrating her role as a daughter, to a mother who cherishes her more than anything in the world. Kennedy’s mom was so excited for this photo session for her daughter and we had a lot of fun planning together. Her mother celebrated her with this session and preserved it with an engraved Custom Linen archival Album in natural oatmeal linen to match the colors her beach home.

I love photographing portraits of individuals in this way. Because who you are matters to many. You are loved and you are cherished and you deserve to be celebrated!

Redefining the Family Portrait Experience

The Intimate Story of Family  – East Coast Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer Angelsea Urban

in·ti·ma·cy (noun)

Something of personal nature. Belonging. Closeness. Familiarity. Nearness. Inseparability. Devotedness.

Bold truth time. I’ve been putting off this post for months because I honestly had NO idea how I was supposed to explain this to people.

I still don’t on so many levels.

How do you explain stuff you can’t really put words to, but you just know? And asking for people to trust you, because you just know that is what we are supposed to be doing?

So in an attempt to put one foot in front of the other, I can share what I do know, and what I can explain, and I’m going to ask that you stay with me on this journey and eventually this will all make sense.  Hopefully to both of us.

I won’t bother you with what specific things prompted these changes, because honestly it’s been a series of events in my life and work for probably more than a year or two or even longer than I care to admit.

Suddenly one day all of these random pieces seemed to click together like a puzzle I never knew was there, and all of a sudden my exisiting business flashed before my eyes and I realized all of the missed opportunities I hadn’t taken, the time I had wasted, and that the most precious thing in the world to me wasn’t even the main focus of the business I spend so much of my life on. That I kept the core of who I was merely to my business philosophy page but not in the forefront of the very work I was producing.

Family.

Every decision I make, I think about my family. How it will affect us. My kids, my husband. Our future, our goals, our mission, my KID’S mission, everything. It all comes back to my family and our life together.

And not just MY family – meaning the one I married and made. But the family that I was a part of when I was born.

I am a daughter. A sister. An aunt. A granddaughter. A niece. An individual also part of a family.

And then it’s not just the family I was born into. But the family I continue to make by choice.

The honorary “Uncles” and “Aunts” that I grew up with. Or our best friends that are now “Aunties” and “Uncles” to our own children. The “cousins” my kids are growing up with. My children’s Godparents. My BFF.

That family also. The family we declared on our own. Not by blood but by choice. Intentionally.

Because we wanted to belong to one another.
When I think about what matters most in my life, I don’t hesitate with an answer. Not my job or my house or vacations or even my heath (which is a very close second). It’s about my family. Spending time with them. Cultivating our relationships. Serving each other. Teaching each other. Being devoted to each other.
At the end of my life, I want to know that I lived my life with an intentional purpose to have an intimate relationship with my family. A similar relationship that I pursue through my faith in Christ. To have that continual hunger for closeness. To experience every kind of emotion that makes us precious and human.

That’s nice, Angie – So what the heck does this have to do with photography?

Nothing. AND…. everything.

I believe as a creative person it’s impossible to separate the product of your “work” from your heart. Because truly all creative work comes from deep in the soul if it is to be authentic.

Sure – I could have a formula of camera settings and go-to poses and I’m sure most clients would be fairly pleased with the results. And there are a number of perfectly talented photographers that can perform that task for them within a client’s particular budget.

But I want to do SO much more than that.

I want you to write letters to your children. And I want to photograph their little faces as they light up hearing about all of things you wish for them.

I want you to journal about your life for your family. And I want to photograph you in that moment. I want you to look back at that photograph and remember how you felt.

I want your children to play hide and seek. To run as fast as they can. To find a clover. To throw leaves.

I want your experience to make memories of precious moments together, not just photographs.

I want for your grandchildren to touch the sand that you walked on. To smell the perfume you wore that day. To hold these photographs in their hands and imagine the sound of your voice in your laughter that day.

I want your mother to hold the single portrait of you. As she celebrates her own child and her own accomplishments of motherhood.

I want to celebrate the intimate story of family with you. In every shape and size. Chapter by Chapter. With intention.

To collaborate on this experience and go beyond just the end resulting photographs or fancy products.

To tell the Intimate Story of YOUR Family.

OK So maybe I can describe it a little? But I know even this is only scratching the surface.

AND… So that I may deliver the best, most rewarding, most intimate, most amazing portrait experiences (gulp)…

I will no longer be booking any other kind of photography.

I love photographing weddings. I truly do. And I will miss my bridal couples terribly. But I know that it just doesn’t fit right now. Maybe it will again someday. Friends, this was one of the hardest decisions to accept and one that has kept me from moving forward in the past several months. But I know that I need to move forward in this direction, even if it doesn’t make complete sense to my logistical brain right now. I just know.

Also, because I’m a fraidy cat and want to stay fresh, and I want to be able to deliver the best artistic experience for each client, I will still be stretching my creative legs with various personal projects, styled shoots and other types of photography through my Education Branch where I will be coaching business owners and training wedding photographers. I *may* even offer to photograph a wedding or two for a very close friend or family member. You can read more about that here EDUCATION DIVISION and here EDUCATION DIVISION: PART 1 – COACHING.

So…. that’s enough wordiness for now, don’t cha think? More information (and details) will come soon I promise.

If this sounds like a photography experience you would be interested in, please contact me using the links below. Sessions are extremely limited in order to deliver the remarkable client experience you deserve.

Jaime & Chase - This is incredible!!! I am just so excited that you are following the prompting of God! This is incredible!! Love you friend and am just so so excited for you!! Big things are in store for you!! Hugs!!!

The Urbans do Disney

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Days upon days upon days of theme parks for the ultimate and LONG family vacation in Florida visiting every Disney park AND Legoland to celebrate our son’s 6th birthday. We had to practically wish ourselves home – surviving on fumes.

Having two children almost 4 years apart, with an older daughter and younger son, makes the age gap more like 10 years apart and it’s as if you are raising two single children. Their interests are so different. Their intellect is SO different. My daughter is a very mature, very compassionate, very – complicated – 10 year old young lady. She is smart. SO smart which makes me super proud and totally perplexed all at the same time. I have no doubt that she will leave a huge mark on this world. My son is simple. He’s a boy. Give him a brick and he’ll find a way to play with it for hours using his incredible imagination. But touch that brick before HE was ready for you to touch it and watch OUT! He is the sweetest boy  – and he loves his mama – which basically means I’m putty.

The last few days before any vacation are tough and chaotic. Packing and organizing alongside cancelled school snow days and then having to cancel work days were difficult. But we made it out the door and onto our plane where we hit the ground running and basically didn’t stop for 11 straight days. We did have a “rest” day. We said we would stay at the resort and relax – by the pool and just hang out. But that turned into a day of paddle boating, biking, swimming and MORE exhaustion because apparently we are incapable of passing up a good time and no one could resist.

The kids took a couple of days to find their groove with each other but then the somehow synced up bonding over legos and the age gap felt a lot smaller. Harmony humored her brother with all of the ooos and ahhs that she could muster. Greyson pretended to know who all of the princesses were when asking for the autographs from the “pretty ladies”. He wore his ears proudly. Even though he didn’t really know who Mickey was until we got there and he found out that Mickey is kind of a big deal in Disney. But none of that really mattered. There was enough parades and shows and fireworks to make the entire experience magical for all of us.

Their favorite time during the entire trip? The pool. Go figure. And Greyson getting an entire car to himself on the monorail (with his family). ha! Or the time that we gave them the room key and a 2 minute head start. OR the kids getting to share a bedroom AND having a TV in their room.

My favorite moments? When Greyson was crying after being totally spooked by a ride and Harmony grabbed his hand and whispered in his ear and held him. Or when we woke up and Harmony had proudly made lunches for the whole family. Or when Steve schlepped around the heavy “family backpack” the entire time so that I didn’t have to carry a thing. Or watching my daughter attempting to eat a giant turkey leg all by herself. Or seeing Greyson “conduct” the fireworks. Or hearing Steve recite every word to that creepy Country Bear Jamboree song that he remembered from when he was like 6 years old.

It was a fabulous family vacation. And I hope the memories made last a long, long time.

But I’m glad they know that it’s not about the mouse or the pool. It’s about the conversation that I had with my daughter during our girls only bike ride. It’s about the random declarations that Greyson made about his relationship with God while riding the monorail. It’s about the hand holding while waiting in lines. It’s about Daddy’s stories being told while paddling around the lake. It’s about celebrating Valentine’s Day with my sweetheart in Paris – even if it’s fake Paris.

It’s always the moments in between the everything in the everyday.

And hanging on to that when we get back into our everyday routines.

Although now we  joke with the kids and threaten – “Behave yourself – or we’ll take you to a theme park.” (And suddenly they are instantly silent and standing at attention lol).

If you follow my Instagram account (#theurbansdodisney) you probably saw loads of cell phone snaps already, but here are a few from my “fancy camera that takes nice pictures.” 😉
