The Intimate Story of Family // Maternity Portrait Session

East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer Angelsea Urban

We were almost halfway through their maternity portrait session in the meadows on the side of a New Jersey highway when I turned to them and said, “guys…. can you believe we are at YOUR maternity session”.

It was their turn.

It was their turn to pick out baby names and plan a nursery theme. To be showered with love and gifts and well wishes because we were all rooting for them. Standing along side them in their journey to parenthood. It was their turn, all in God’s time.

You know people will be great parents by the way they treat other people’s children. And these two treat mine like gold. So much so that when we would announce to our kids that Kacey and Cameron would be coming for a visit they jumped for joy (our kids that is lol). Even more than their own playmates. Because that’s how they were treated. Like they were having visitors too, not just their parents.  And even though Steve and I would be anxious to get the kids to bed so we can dive into late night heart to hearts with these two, we know that our kids cherished them too. They were looked at and spoken with, not to. You can’t fool children. They know a good soul when they see it. And they are so right.

It was such a sincere pleasure to photograph Kacey & Cameron and capture the tender moments before parenting begins. To spend some quiet time when it is still the two of them. Reflecting on the anticipation, and the moments between them as a couple. To share some heartfelt wishes with each other and for their future together as parents. What an honor to be witness to such intimate moments.

I cannot wait to meet their little lass soon. She is already such a warrior child and will be welcomed into the arms of two parents with the biggest hearts around. I am beyond thrilled for the blessing they are about to receive and I know that this child will make an enormous impact in this world.

May God bless your family abundantly!

XOXO,
Angie

Here are just a few of my favorites from their portrait session.

Family Traditions and The Olaf Effect

Last year Easter was in March. We have a tradition to visit the kid’s favorite restaurant, The Rainforest Cafe (ok, it’s really just my favorite restaurant but who counting), for their annual brunch (which is not actually ON Easter – so it works out for us). They do a fabulous job with activities for the kids, and the food is great, but really – any excuse to dine sandwiched between a waterfall and gigantic fish tank with sounds of the rainforest is ok in my book. What started as a sad attempt to relive a moment in our beloved Costa Rica turned into a fun family tradition that we all enjoy for faux Easter. (And on Mother’s day or my birthday or really any time I can manage to convince them we have to see Cha Cha.)

Last year it was freakishly warm – in MARCH. The beach was totally flat and the sandbar stretched out forever allowing the kids to run circles around the giant puddles chasing the seagulls around. It was a great day. And I know the seagulls were having fun too – they were happy to see some life on the beach after a long cold winter.

This March has been looooong. And Cold. I can’t wait to stick my toes in the sand that doesn’t require me sweeping off the snow first. This is the northeast, I get it. And I like snow, but really, enough is enough. I’m done for this year, mmkay? I need my kids to get outside again – without 47 layers of clothes. And let’s not talk about how many times the Frozen Soundtrack (although wonderful) has been lived out every day in full detail round these parts. It’s at the point that when someone is grumpy we declare them to “OLAF” and said grumpy person must break into Olaf’s Summer Song – flailing arms and all. This tactic has worked for a few months now, it makes said grumpy person smile, and really, it’s totally amusing to see your husband have to sing about dandelion fuzz. But the “Olaf Effect” is wearing thin, and we need this picture below to come back into our lives again.

So here’s to the first day of Spring! Horaaay! And Punxsutawney Phil, if you see your shadow again next year I won’t stop Steve from going hunting.

When your knees are shaky

All you can do to find the will to stand up at all, nevermind what your purpose is, or how you will get there and most of all WHY you are even doing it at all.

Maybe you knew it once and had forgotten. Maybe life got in the way again and you lost focus. Maybe it was clear as day, but your knees were shaky and so you hesitated. Maybe it’s all of that and more.

And just like that, someone gives you that gentle little nudge. And they didn’t even know they just rocked your world. The ground is still again.

In my little world where lines are blurred between life and work, art and business, faith and relationships, my knees are often shaky. And then once in a while I get the smallest glimpse of the foundation beneath my feet. The smallest peek to remind me of WHY I do what I do and why those lines have to be completely blurred to make it happen.

I cannot wait to share one of my most favorite sessions to date.  A profound experience into the newly refined direction for photographing families. I so badly want to dive in to their portraits, but I am busy prepping to teach my very first workshop happening this weekend. Holy cow this is actually happening. lol

To Kacey & Cameron… I. just. can’t. even…

Creating a remarkable client experience

At the end of last year, I set out to create an entirely different type of client experience for 2014. Going beyond what kind of fancy products you may receive at the end of our experience together, but deconstructing each tiny part, evaluating it, and creating an intentional, unique, and meaningful journey that goes far beyond your 90 minutes in front of my camera.

One of the products I wanted to include, as my gift with every story told, is an Heirloom Chapter Box. Each one representing a Chapter of your lives and adding to your story. Hand crafted by a team of artisans, these heirloom pieces were only available as an add on to collections offered last year. I so believe in the importance of tangible art pieces to tell your family story, that I have adjusted all collections this year to now include them as standard with every single collection. This change will be in effect just as soon as our inventory is fully stocked.

Partnering with artisans like these, who take their crafts as seriously as I do, add so much value to the client experience. Each artist, from the carpenter to the leather smith offers a tangible piece of their legacy to pass on to the person who receives it.

I am so excited to be working with some amazing artisans this year. From carpenters to leathersmiths, to custom bookbinders and seamstresses they are all helping me to create totally unique products for my clients. I have been on the hunt to parter up with not only artisans that can help make my client’s experience amazing, but those whose company has a core value beyond dollars and cents. Those who are utilizing their talents and gifts for something meaningful and with intention. It’s been especially hard for me to be patient during this process, finding artisans I believe in and can partner with and focusing on quality products as these individual pieces come together. I cannot wait to share all that is in store for this year and I know it will be so worth this carefully invested time.

Here is a little peek inside the heart of the artisans that create my Heirloom Chapter Boxes by HH Boogie. Their craftsmanship is unparalleled and I am proud to be able to stand alongside them and include them in my product line.

The Intimate Story of Family – The Couples Portrait Session and Fear of the Family Portrait

The Intimate Story of Family – The Couples Portrait Session by East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer Angelsea Urban

~

Why do most people fear the Family Portrait? Based on a ton of research I’ve done lately to refine my portrait brand, I conclude the top two reasons to be this:

1. Fear of looking bad physically

2. Fear of the cheese factor, looking or acting “fake”

However, both of these fears can be easily squashed with one word: VULNERABILITY

How do we do that?

Fear of looking bad physically:

If you’ve had children, I could ask you if you were afraid of what you looked like when your child was born? A moment likely captured on film or phone or digital camera and I am guessing the look on your face in that image – with messy hair and maybe sweat on your face and maybe IV tubes all around you – the look on your face as you see your newborn child was worthy to be captured. As a timeless memory for you, and for your family. The fear of looking bad physically was gone. You were completely vulnerable and in the moment. Nothing else mattered but the sound of your newborn’s cry and their daddy’s hand on your forehead telling you that you are his hero.

Nothing will replace those memories for you, but that image now remains for your child. The moment they entered and totally took over your world. THEY will treasure that forever. They are not looking at your hair or your sweat or even the IV tubes hooked up to you.

~ They treasure that look on your face. They see nothing else. ~

My grandmother always says, “if you don’t like a picture of yourself…just wait 5 years then look at it again.” At 80 years old I believe her experiences and advice and can totally agree. Your children will never see the imperfections you see unless you teach them to. If I had a dollar for every person that waited to get their portraits taken because they wanted to improve the way they looked….well… you get the idea.

I beg you not to let your perception of the perfect you stop you from creating wonderful memories for your family and future generations.

Fear of the cheese factor, looking or acting “fake”

If it feels fake, it will look fake… because it IS fake. This equals How to make Cheese 101.

This is what makes you cringe when you see this image of yourself. Because you don’t see the nicely exposed and composed image before you, you are taken back to that moment of fakeness. You are reminded of what you had to do to make yourself give that fake smile because the experience was cringeworthy. Maybe in 5 years the cheese memory will fade and you can appreciate the photograph, but right now, you are cringing.

Imagine you let down your guard and forgot there was a camera in your face for just a moment. (I know – it’s not the easiest thing to do), but what happens when you allow that is VULNERABILITY. The possibility to create an actual moment. Not a fake one.

The moment when you are your husband spend a minute talking about your wedding day as he describes what his first thoughts of you were that day. How he feels more in love with you today than that day. Are you wondering if your husband is even willing to have this conversation – in front of a camera? Don’t worry, he will. He loves you. He loved you that day, and this day. He will. Trust that he will, and he may surprise you.

Often times we get caught up in life and the need to “get things done” that this experience for you both becomes one of those “things” to cross off the list. GET FAMILY PORTRAITS DONE. CHECK.

I beg you not to allow this to happen. Instead of composing and exposing and CHECK, got “the shot”, let’s go grab some pizza….what if you allowed yourselves the opportunity to have these conversations?

Allowing yourself to hit pause on the fast forwarding of life and just, be. Be yourselves. Be vulnerable.

When it was just the two of you – before kids – before careers and mortgages. When you were just one gal and one guy and nothing else in the world mattered. When the two of you could conquer the world together. The way his hand fits in yours and the way that he just knows you – all of you. From the forehead kisses to the way you take your coffee to the moments that make up your everyday life together. When you allow yourselves to be that vulnerable, a beautiful thing happens……intimacy.

And when this couple looks back at this photograph, years from now, they will remember how they felt in that moment. How that vulnerable, intimate moment together was theirs, and it was real.

I believe that the Family Portrait should offer up a much more meaningful experience as you make these memories together.

I believe that the portraits you will cherish for generations should not only reflect this experience, but enable you to nourish these relationships.

Redefining the Family Portrait Experience is not just about showcasing the nuclear family.

Not every family looks like that. In fact, most of them don’t.

~

Family is…

A couple … committing their lives to each other

A daughter … a child or grown adult

son … a child or grown adult

mother … or a mother with her child or children

mother in waiting … in anticipation of her new child

A  father … or a father with his child or children

nuclear family … married parents with their children and maybe even the dog

grandparent …. alone or with their own families or spouses

Sisters … just the girls or grown women

Brothers … just the boys or grown women

Siblings … just the kids or just the grown up adult siblings

Extended Families … the grandparents, the adult children and their children

Families by Choice: Best friends or honorary Uncles or Aunties with those they hold near and dear

And on and on the list would go….

~

Below are a few images from a photoshoot with some of the darling women of the Tri-State Pursuit 31 group. We had an amazing time with our “models” who were all former clients and friends. Michelle and Scott were some of my favorite clients ever – with some of the cutest kids ever – so cute that their kids are seen in my permanent portfolio. But this day was just about them – as a couple, and I was so thrilled that they were able to join us.
