True Story: I decorated my house around my family photos

It’s all Tiffany Farley’s fault, really.

At least that’s what we say when we are on the 47th gallon of paint and are reminding ourselves why we are doing this.

But really. I redecorated my house to accommodate the family wall that I had envisioned since we moved in. In 2006. I know. It’s awful I waited so long.

Our first apartment was ALL white and we weren’t allowed to paint the walls, so I had associated white walls with restricted apartment living and I automatically cringed when I thought about it having white walls again.

At 22 years old, we purchased our first actual house and spent the next 7 years making it our home.  We painstakingly hand painted everything we could from trendy faux finishes to custom murals for Harmony’s nursery.  Making everything so NOT WHITE. We gutted and replaced the kitchen, we gutted and replaced the bathroom, moved walls, landscaped the yard, built a back porch, everything. It was totally our home. It’s funny how tastes and styles change, because looking at these pictures now, I chuckle. A purple couch? Really? This is what happens when you are 22 years old picking out furniture. lol

It was the home where we became a family. Where my daughter took her first steps, when we put our blood, sweat and tears making this “house” into our home. I cried when we sold it. But we knew it was time to move on and eventually our new house, would also, someday, feel like our home.

Our first house.

Angelsea Urban - East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer_1092So building a new house, from scratch, was daunting. And the thought of going back to white walls made me want to hurl. So before we moved in, we hired painters to paint every single room in the new house. I was overwhelmed with decisions and had to pick them ALL at once and it was just too much. I shouted out “BEIGE” because that is all I thought “neutral” was at the time, and since we had a really open floor plan, it had to flow from one room to the next. I figured I could change it out at any time when we were more settled in. So the painters moved at lightning speed, and started painting every square inch beige until someone convinced me to add a “splash” of color.

The left picture below what the house looked like when we first moved in. We proceeded to paint it ALL beige except for the “splash” of toasted nutmeg here and there.

See. THIS wall (below, left) was going to be our “Family wall”. It was supposed to have a fireplace smack in the middle. And two windows on either side of it. But as you round the corner of the foyer and into the kitchen/dining/family room combo, I didn’t want to stare at a fireplace wall with windows looking into my neighbor’s house. I wanted to look at my Family Wall.

It’s a large wall – almost 15 feet wide. So hanging anything on it looked super tiny. We painted it toasted nutmeg, threw a (large – 3 foot by 5 foot) tapestry on it (and whatever those other things are – I don’t even know – yikes) and went about our life. Until one day we would make it our Family Wall.

Fast forward 6 years (and + 1 new child into the family) later, and there that wall sat. In all of it’s BURGUNDY glory.

We had made time over the past 6 years to build a large deck, landscape THIS yard, move walls, add doors, remodel the living room/play room to make a studio, and then some. But sadly, we never did make time for the Family Wall.

Angelsea Urban - East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer_1087

Finally, we had an opportunity to be photographed by my dear friend and talented photographer Tiffany Farley. I longed for a series of black & white canvases and I knew that those black & white canvases would NOT be living on that BURGUNDY wall. And of course, after seeing the beautiful photographs she took, I wouldn’t be doing them any justice but slapping them up on that wall as is.

So when the canvases came in, we painted. And painted, and painted some more. Suddenly, the freshly painted beautiful shade of restoration hardware grey, didn’t match the beige kitchen. So we painted that. And then once the kitchen was painted grey, the cabinets looked so…. BROWN. And so we painted those too. And then, we never did put knobs on the cabinets, so we did THAT as well. And THEN no new kitchen would be complete without a new stained glass backsplash, or a new faucet to replace the construction grade one it came with, so we did THAT too. You get the idea.

And so – for the last year, we have been slowly remodeling just about the entire first floor just to showcase the Family Wall.

I am a huge fan of displaying family photographs in the home. To get the images out of the computer and into the hands (and walls) in a tangible way. I talk to my clients about this all the time and I urge them to show off their family portraits. And I was such a hypocrite, because I had not done the same for my own family. For years and years, everything else came first.

Above is a series of 30″ x 30 ” canvases. They are rather large up close, and it definitely took some getting used to, but they fit so perfectly onto that large wall. There is still so much we’d like to do to our “house” and it will be never ending –  because really, we are DIYers at heart. Thank you again, dear Tiffany, for the wonderful gift you have given my own family.

Because now, it finally feels like home.

(Especially with the giant tower of lego drawers next to the couch. :-/ ) Yes. It is home.

nicole leboeuf - I have to tell you that I came home after seeing that wall and said to ErIc. I wanta wall like that. So all of your hard work is inspiring others as well.:-)

The LeBoeuf Family // Lifestyle Family Portraits Long Beach Island

The way she looks at her brother. With adoring eyes and running into his arms so he can swing her around in the wind. Total trust. The way he cares for her and kisses her forehead and makes sure she is being taken care of. When mom and dad have a quiet moment together and try to remember what life was like before they were in it. When they put their foreheads together and just exhale. Reflecting on the gifts they’ve been given and the life that seems just a tad sweeter in that very moment.

It’s what makes my job so amazing. That I get to see this unfold through my lens and tell the story of this family through pictures.

Family Portraits should not be about faking perfect smiles in front of the camera to create an illusion of perfection.

Redefining the Family Portrait is about being very intentional about nourishing the bond of your family, and cultivating the relationships within them. And that is always perfection. Because it’s real and it’s raw and it’s what they will remember years from now when they are looking at these photographs. They will remember how amazing they felt when Dad held them that, when Mommy said those encouraging words to him.  When your daughter jumped into your arms and squeezed your neck like she was never going to let go. When your husband shed a tear as you poured out your heart to him.

I had an amazing time working with the LeBoeuf Family for their Long Beach Island Session, the portraits we created together were a reflection of the time they spent together as a family. It was my sincere pleasure to capture these images for them.

Thanks for stopping by to view a few of my personal favorites from their portrait session. Be sure to leave them some love in the comments below.

It’s not about the pictures // The story of Family

It’s like I’m 6 years old and all I can think about is Christmas. And it’s only February. :-/

That’s what this process has been for me.

It’s been a long process of taking very teeny, tiny, itty bitty baby steps into this direction. Which is not like me at all. If I get an idea, I’d rather run 100 miles an hour until I’m finished. I like to be done. To feel like I have crossed my t’s and dotted every i.

But this time is different. Because it’s not about me and what I want. It’s about being obedient to do what matters most. And it’s been hard for me to be disciplined enough to slow down and take my time and be very intentional about what to do and how to do it. It’s hard not being finished quickly. It’s VERY hard to feel like you live in the slow lane and the world is whizzing by all around you. It’s hard to keep focus and prevent from succumbing to the thoughts of, “it’s ok, just switch lanes and you can still catch up, no one will really care about this anyway.”

In order for me to “Redefine the Family Portrait” and refining my brand around it, I knew that the trouble wouldn’t be in deciding which color ribbon to wrap the handcrafted journal in. That’s the quick answer. But WHY am I including a journal at all? WHAT am I asking my clients to write in it? WHY am I asking them to write in it? HOW does this affect their portrait session? HOW does that affect the way they will be interacting with each other during the session? And on and on. That’s the slow lane.

And that’s just the journal.

Because it’s not about the European ribbon at all. Although, yes it’s beautiful.

It’s not even about the Italian handmade linen & lace satchels that enclose the letters.

It’s not about the linen pouch of vanilla beans imported from Costa Rica.

It’s not about the wood heirloom box handcrafted by generations of amish artisans.

It’s about WHY I was led to so painstakingly chose these specific items, and more specifically, how they will be incorporated beyond pretty packaging.  How they will have a deeper meaning into their overall intentional purpose during our time together.

Redefining the Family Portrait Experience is not about the pictures. At all. Although, yes, they will be beautiful.

It’s about nourishing the bonds of family and cultivating the relationships within them. The pictures go into the box along with the rest of the pieces. (And hopefully displayed throughout your home). I am merely the storyteller to those images.

It’s about YOU. YOU are the ones writing your own story. The story of YOUR family. The story of YOU.

I have been unofficially rolling out this new program in bits and pieces since the beginning of the year, and the response so far has been just amazing to witness. I am so encouraged by spending time with these families and cannot wait to finalize all of these details and incorporate each piece into the new client experience for all of them.

Here’s a little peek of some of the pieces as they are coming together. I feel like it might actually, FINALLY be nearing Thanksgiving now.

And Christmas is just around the corner….

The Crawford Family // Lifestyle Newborn Family Portraits

A while back I shared a little of Kacey & Cameron’s story and why their maternity portraits were so special to me. How our time together was such a great reminder of why I approach portrait photography the way I do, and why I can’t ever go back to the way it used to be years ago. There is always that one moment. That click. That reminds you of why you do what you do. Their session was one of those moments for me.

As Kacey went through her journey to motherhood I wept when she wept and I smiled when she smiled. Relating to her struggle myself so many years ago, I prayed for their happy ending. That they would be blessed with the most beautiful child and they would know a happiness they have never could have imagined. That life would never be the same for them again.

Prayers are not always answered. But sometimes they are. And the intimate story of their family of three has only just begun…

I couldn’t be more thrilled to meet sweet baby Tenleigh. A name as unique as she will undoubtably be. Relaxed, very aware and just happy to be alive, I can’t imagine a more perfect pair of parents to have been entrusted to.

Congratulations to the proud parents and grandparents all around! I can’t wait to see the little lady she will be become.

Thank you for stopping by to view a few of my personal favorites from their very first family portrait experience. Be sure to leave them some love in the comments below. 🙂

Tara - ooooh that baby. and that silhouette with the rain… so good.

The Story of Family // Daane Family Portraits // Charlottesville, Virginia

Meet BethDaane. As in one word. Because my husband nicknamed her, Bethdaaaaaane. One word. A talented photographic artist. An inspiring woman. An awesome mother, and a very dear friend. We’ve shared as many laughs as tears together and way too many (and never enough) up all night heart to hearts. She encourages me and challenges me in my life and work. She is a huge cheerleader and a steady sounding board. Everybody needs a Bethdaaaane in their life. And I am so appreciative she is in mine.

Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to get her and her sweet little blonde family in front of my camera at the Barboursville Winery in Charlottesville, VA.

When photographing other photographer friends, it’s easy to just swap gear and say cheese. We know the drill. We have the programs and we could even edit and order everything ourselves. But photographers are wives and mothers and women who adore their families just as much as any other client. Often not having nearly as many portraits on their walls as they should. What matters most in their lives, their own families, often gets photographed the least. I speak from experience. We should serve our own families as if they are our most important clients, ever.

Since slowly rolling out the all new Client Experience and Redefining the Family Portrait, I wanted Beth and her family to be an actual client. Not just to show up and smile pretty and hand her the images I captured.

So, I asked her to do the “homework”. It’s become a signature part of the unique family portrait experience offered to my clients. Spending time preparing not just their hair, but their hearts for their lifestyle portrait session together. Creating an intimate space to nourish family bonding and cultivate their relationships with each other. The photographs created are merely the souvenir from their precious time together. A small part of our overall experience together.

The response to this program has been amazing. And I am thrilled that Beth and her sweet family allowed me to be a part of these wonderful family memories together. I hope her children remember how encouraged they felt and how much fun they had with their mom and dad that day and with each other.

Because at the end of the day, we should be appreciative of the intentional time we spend with the ones we love the most. And not an ounce of regret for a missed opportunity.

Thanks for stopping by to view a few of my personal favorite portraits of the Daane Family.
