Location, Location, Location // Blog Series Part 1: The Beach

When you choose a piece of art for your walls, whether it be a painting or frame or tapestry, you are careful to be sure the textures, colors, and sizes will conform to your personal taste in your home. All the more reason to carefully plan the same for your custom family portraits.

“Where should we go for the photoshoot?” is always an important question when planning your experience.  Ideas such as the beach or the park are wonderful, but my goal with this blog series is to show the subtle differences in common locations so that you can choose a location that works perfectly for your family photography experience.
Key questions to ask yourself:

1. Where will these portraits be displayed?

Will they be in the family room? What color is the room? What style is it? Rustic? Cottage? Industrial? The purpose behind capturing the photos should be for intentionally cultivating the relationships and preserving them through photography, but they are ultimately meant for display, so thinking about where they will be showcased is a key component.

I recently had a client execute this in the most perfect way. They have a sea glass green colored casual family room where they envisioned their family portraits to one day hang. We planned their session at the beach, earlier in the day to get the correct colors. When they received their final product order, including a series of large canvases, they blended perfectly into their room, picking up the colors from the sand and ocean, matching the walls, curtains, decorative bottles and sailboats.

2. Is there a place or activity that is special, sentimental or significant to the people that will be in the photographs?

Is your favorite family past time to go the beach? Do you spend every Sunday at the park? The boardwalk? And if so, do you want that location to have a voice in this event – or do you simply want to incorporate the colors or textures? Do you envision your children frolicking in the sand? Picking flowers? Throwing leaves?

You and your family will always be the focus and priority of the photography experience. The activities and memories shared during the session will be directly affected by the location you choose.

PART 1: THE BEACH – Daytime vs. Evening

For Part 1 of this series, this week’s post will focus on one of the most requested locations in my area, the Jersey Shore, or most specifically, Long Beach Island, NJ.

There are two collections of images below. Both are taken on Long Beach Island, NJ. The major difference is time of day. The first collection is taken earlier in the day. This decision produces portraits that give the Atlantic Ocean a slight Caribbean effect. The water looks lighter and clearer based on the position the light is coming from. The portraits from a session at this time of day have more subdued colors, and mostly pastel tones. Wardrobe consideration should match this theme, lightly colored, pastels, white and neutrals. Cloudy days don’t have a huge effect on this look, and the colors are pretty consistent whether clear or cloudy. The black & white portraits from this decision produce a “light” tone based mostly on shades of light grey and white. The sand converts to a light grey and the waters, a medium grey. The finished black & white portrait is soft, neutral and subdued.

The second collection of images, also taken on Long Beach Island, NJ were taken just before and during sunset. This produces dramatic portraits with strong colors, highly saturated images with a stronger contrast. The waters turn a deeper blue as the sun sets, until it reflects a deep orange. Wardrobe consideration would be neutrals, whites, pastels, and denim. In Long Beach Island, on the oceanside, there will be no “sun” in your sunset portrait, only the colors produced from the sunset. If you would like the sun directly in your portrait, we would go to a bayside beach instead. On cloudy days, you might be little disappointed – you will likely see colors similar to the “daytime” portraits instead of a dramatic sunset portrait. However, the weather at the Jersey Shore is very unpredictable. If there is a day of high heat and humidity, there might be an even storm that follows. Evening portraits are usually scheduled and chances are they pass just in time for a dramatic, post storm gorgeous sunset. The black & white portraits for this session might have slightly more contrast due to the darker captured colors, but ultimately the sand will convert to a light gray and the waters a medium grey. The finished black & white portrait is neutral and subdued, but blends in seamlessly into the color collection.

I hope this information was helpful to clients and photographer friends making these decisions this summer. Feel free to pass along and check back next week for Part 2: The Park

CoSchedule: Bloggers take note of this amazing new WordPress plug in

It didn’t take me more than 24 hours to fall in love with the time saving program, CoSchedule for WordPress.

There are so many different Social Media outlets to manage, and each having their own ever changing set of “algorithms” it’s become a great effort to attempt to manage getting content out for eager readers to see. Even then, only a small percentage get to see the content, so posting multiple times per day on different outlets becomes necessary. Sadly, having time to do all that is just not possible for me, and so my stats suffer. I can schedule my blog posts, and have that copy to my Facebook Business Page, but that is just about it. In order for me to schedule anything further, I have to go to each individual platform and schedule posts – IF they can even be scheduled – so far – it’s just Facebook. It helps that I try to maintain a Monday/Thursday blogging schedule – so friends who follow the blog know when to check for new content – but even then, it’s nice to have a reminder from their favorite social media outlet.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to find CoSchedule – a drag-and-drop editorial calendar for WordPress that puts your blog posts and social media messages on the same schedule.

I am able to link up all of my favorite social media platforms, INCLUDING Pinterest – which I thought was the icing on the cake. I actually decided to add a new board on Pinterest JUST to link up my blog posts from now on. Part of the reason I rarely pinned my own posts were because some were related to business, some were sessions from clients that were published, others were related to ministry or even personal posts. Again – time being an issue – I relied on clients and fans to post and link to the blogs posts they liked to their own Pinterest accounts – and their support has been amazing. But thanks to CoSchedule, I can make that easier for friends who follow my Pinterest account to have quick access to blog posts as well.  Now – if they add Instagram on there someday I might not ever want for anything ever again.

The best thing about CoSchedule is that as you drag a post from one date to another, your social media messages move with it. This allows bloggers to create a series of messages that promote their blog posts on a rolling schedule.

AND – I was even able to link it to my Google Calendar which was just AMAZING. Maybe you read my guest post on Rachelle Chase’s Blog where I talk about some of my scheduling in life and business while raising kids – mostly through my google calendar. So, having CoSchedule link back to my google calendar was a huge bonus.

It was one of those days. I was wondering what the heck am I doing and guessing my way through how to transition my brand to highlight the newly Redefined Family Portrait Experience. Needless to say, I was beyond excited and truly grateful the day that brand designer, Leslie Vega reached out to me and asked to feature some of my packaging & branding elements in the June issue of Chic Magazine. Um…. yes please. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by today, and thanks again to Leslie for including me in your article, I am truly enjoying (and learning from) the information.

Isabella - Your post is a timely cotiotbunirn to the debate

Meet our newest family member

We made it! We might have waived our white flags during the last week when there was more paperwork then I knew what to do with, but school is officially out, and today marks the kid’s first official day of summer vacation. And CUE all the working mamas out there joining me in a bit of excitement followed by a bit of panic. Our family is looking forward to some exciting activities planned, and some quality downtime together too. Especially since the newest addition to our family just arrived by way of Charlottesville, VA just a week or so ago.

Meet: Mr. Belvedere’s Mustache – our new Guinea Pig – much to Penny’s delight. Yes. Penny is a Yorkshire “Terrier” – who’s natural instinct is to HUNT rodents. So… needless to say – she’s been SUUUUPER excited to have this little piggy in our home. They have been getting along nicely so far, and the kids have been seriously amused watching them get used to each other. We used to joke that Penny is so tiny that most other dogs don’t really know what to do with her. That maybe a guinea pig would be a good size playmate. Judging by the photo – and the fact that Mr. B’s Mustache is still a baby, I think that might just work out. She’s not interested in eating him, thankfully, but she is SO excited to PLAY with him that she is getting a little impatient that he’s not that exciting just yet.

You can follow Penny’s shenanigan’s on Instagram at #pennythepuppa. We should probably think about a proper hashtag for the pig now too, huh?

Thanks for visiting today!

My ambition in life is to …

I recently opened the children’s fresh new yearbook. Hot off the presses. The were anxious to show me every last bit. So I started with the beginning. The 5th Grade class. Neither of mine are in 5th Grade yet, but I was committed to pouring over every last page of their precious book.

I saw the portraits of all of the children laid out in a perfect grid. One by one, they had answered a single question…

The question was, “My Life’s Ambition is to … ”

Open ended.

Not – “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Or “What Career path will you take?” Or even, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” BUT –

My ambition in life is to …

What a GREAT question!

However, I was slightly shocked with the answers.

One said, “I want to be a famous actress“. Another one said, a “pro football player”. And another, “to be a policeman”.

All admirable career choices.

But all career choices, nonetheless.

How sad is it that in today’s job market is so competitive, that in 5th grade they are having to make their life’s ambition all about a job.

Elementary school is all about testing so that they can do well in high school.

High school is all about college prep. So that they can be prepared to job hunt for no less than 3.25 years for an entry level job that will pay a fraction of what their college loans will be.

I’m not trying to be pessimistic. But this just is the current state of life that we live in right now. It’s not perfect but it IS all of our fault. Because this behavior is engrained in our children from the world we created for them.

As I poured into the yearbook I found only a small handful of optimistic children.

They said,

My ambition in life is to… “help poor men and women.”

My ambition in life is to… “do charity work.”

My ambition in life is to… “be great at everything!” <—- with an exclamation mark!

Life is way more than a career choice.

I never want my kids to think they have to Work to live.
There is as much honor in serving coffee to strangers as there is in serving as a police officer. Yes, your quality of life will be different than that of a rocket scientist, but that is not my point here.

Be the kid on the beach throwing themselves in the freezing cold water having the best day of their life.  And they will have the best day of their life again tomorrow.

Be the server with a smile on their face wishing you the best. day. ever. with absolute sincerity.

Be the wife that serves her husband, not out of obligation, but out of love, admiration and respect.

Be the guy on the subway that gets up when a women needs a seat.

Make it your life’s ambition to leave a legacy of not only contributing good, skilled work through the career of your choice, but of changing the lives of those around you through that, whatever it may be. By loving others fearlessly. Whether you are a stay at home mother, a coffee pourer, a doctor, or just a gentleman who held the door for someone that day.

Be the one who inspires those around you…. to live life as if you are running into a freezing cold ocean having the best. day. ever.

AGAIN.
