Home Depot in the pouring rain

Yes we were at Home Depot in the pouring rain.

Angelsea Urban - East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer_1486

Because why not?

We were the only people in the store. Until over an hour later, we were finally checking out and noticed a man buying nails. Yes, nails at 9 pm on a Wednesday night.

We didn’t need to go to Home Depot that night – or even in the rain, the pouring rain, but we went anyway. Stopping at Applebees first because the kids had won a free sundae for excellent reading throughout the school year. But it was a random Wednesday and we had some projects in mind and that today seemed as good a day as any. That’s what umbrellas are for and what childhood memories are made of. “That day we went to Home Depot in the pouring rain – to buy stone – in the garden center – outside – at 9 pm at night.” That will be the story they tell one day. Of how they were jumping in puddles in the garden department, way past their bedtime, as mom & dad bought a bunch of random bricks. It’s the little random things. Sometimes it’s the epic vacation that took us 3 years to save for, and sometimes it’s splashing in puddles in the garden center of Home Depot past bedtime.

Summer has been in full swing and we are trying to savor every second. From backyard barbecues with friends to summer date nights at the beach. Lounging around on the deck and even a cleaning at the dentist. We’ve tried a few new Pinterest recipes – (And the pretzel bowl was a HUGE hit). We’ve had lots of visitors and can’t wait for even more. We celebrated Penny’s birthday, surprised Daddy at work for lunch and even managed to make a stop motion lego video to promote our church’s VBS. It’s been a crazy & fun summer so far and we are hoping to enjoy every minute.

Location Series // Part 3: Anywhere or Somewhere Special

I have been so thrilled to read some of the messages that have poured in from this current series on choosing a location for your portrait session. Both clients and photographers have been able to gain some insight as to the differences from times of day to the seasons when making the decision for outdoor locations.

Part 1 of this series explained the differences of photographing clients at The Beach during the day verses evening. You can read Part 1 – The Beach post here.  While Part 2 went over some differences when photographing clients at The Park, looking at Golden Hour vs. Daytime and Spring vs. Summer. You can read Part 2: The Park post here.

Today we’ll be looking at the differences between photographing “Anywhere” or “Somewhere Special.

To recap – here are some of the things that I like to take into consideration when talking to clients about where they should be photographed.

When you choose a piece of art for your walls, whether it be a painting or frame or tapestry, you are careful to be sure the textures, colors, and sizes will conform to your personal taste in your home. All the more reason to carefully plan the same for your custom family portraits.

“Where should we go for the photoshoot?” is always an important question when planning your experience.  Ideas such as the beach or the park are wonderful, but my goal with this blog series is to show the subtle differences in common locations so that you can choose a location that works perfectly for your family photography experience.
Key questions to ask yourself:

1. Where will these portraits be displayed?

Will they be in the family room? What color is the room? What style is it? Rustic? Cottage? Industrial? The purpose behind capturing the photos should be for intentionally cultivating the relationships and preserving them through photography, but they are ultimately meant for display, so thinking about where they will be showcased is a key component.

I recently had a client execute this in the most perfect way. They have a sea glass green colored casual family room where they envisioned their family portraits to one day hang. We planned their session at the beach, earlier in the day to get the correct colors. When they received their final product order, including a series of large canvases, they blended perfectly into their room, picking up the colors from the sand and ocean, matching the walls, curtains, decorative bottles and sailboats.

2. Is there a place or activity that is special, sentimental or significant to the people that will be in the photographs?

Is your favorite family past time to go the beach? Do you spend every Sunday at the park? The boardwalk? And if so, do you want that location to have a voice in this event – or do you simply want to incorporate the colors or textures? Do you envision your children frolicking in the sand? Picking flowers? Throwing leaves?

You and your family will always be the focus and priority of the photography experience. The activities and memories shared during the session will be directly affected by the location you choose.

PART 3: ANYWHERE vs SOMEWHERE SPECIAL

Sometimes location doesn’t matter at all. When the session is focused on the people in the portraits, and not focused on the surroundings. Lighting is always important, but a mix of natural and artificial light, plus proper planning for time of day results in portraits that are very intimate and intentionally focused on the moments in them. The background is either intentionally photographed out of focus, or cropped close enough to concentrate the attention on the people. These sessions are planned anywhere – a backyard, a museum, a parking garage or a driveway. People are often surprised at the results from some unusual locations that you would never know the origin. It could be anywhere at all and the results would be just as beautiful.

In the opposite scenario – sometimes clients have a very special, or very sentimental place they would like to be photographed in. Often this place takes on a position in the portraits as an additional subject. Playing a role of importance just as high as the people in them. Giving the location a voice and personality of it’s own. Leaving its own mark on the session, and without it, the memories of the day would be totally different.

For example – first top left photograph in the collection of images below. “Waiting in the Field” This location was chosen specifically because the meaning of the name of this couple’s unborn child was “golden meadow”. When discussing possible locations for this couple’s maternity session, a “meadow” was at the top of the list. The meadow was showcased almost as much as the beautiful baby bump. The couple exchanged some incredible intimate moments and tears in that meadow that day, and the session would not have had the lasting impact it did in any other location. It was incredibly meaningful to them and their Wooden Heirloom box holds a tiny piece of that meadow to show their beautiful daughter someday.

Another example is the bottom left photograph “Before the Storm“. This location was chosen specifically because this Manhattan mother grew up creating many, many memories with her family at the Seaside, NJ boardwalk during her childhood. This classic Lifestyle Session took place starting at one end of the boardwalk, and ended in another. Along the way she told her family all about her youth; stories about her favorite shops and sweetest memories and then sharing each of their locations. Just 4 days after this session Hurricane Sandy completely destroyed this boardwalk. The only thing left was the memories of her youth, and the portrait session we had along the boardwalk.

The Tangible heirlooms behind The Story of Family Experience

As more and more people embrace the tangible portrait experience, it’s been so refreshing to see client’s light up with excitement when they get to touch and feel handcrafted items that will be passed down for generations. Digital products are fun, for now. And we love to have our family portraits on our phones and spread through social media to share with those who we don’t get to see daily. But for family in the years to come, it’s a wonderful thing to cherish the tangible items that can be passed down.

From the handcrafted chapter box, to the hand made linen envelopes, and from the hand dyed ribbon to the hand bound linen journals, each item has been touched by an artisan that cares for their products and it’s representation as much as I care for the photographs that will be showcased through them. It’s their legacy to help provide these tangible items to pass on to your family.

These are just some of the items that are included with every portrait session in The Story of Family Experience. There is a specific purpose to each of these items, and as we work together I can’t wait to walk you through each one! Be sure to book your summer session before dates are full.

Location, Location, Location // Part 2: The Park

Last week I wrote about the importance of choosing the location for your family portrait session and highlighted the differences between a very popular location, the beach. This week we will look at the differences of a park like setting, comparing different seasons and times of day.

PART 2: THE PARK – Golden hour vs. Daytime & Fall vs. Spring/Summer

For Part 2 of this series, this week’s post will focus on the 2nd most requested locations in my area, a “park”.

The term “park” can be used loosely for a description of any location with lots of greenery. Clients often think we have to travel to a very popular destination to achieve this look, but primarily they are looking for “greenery” which may also be found in their backyard, or mine. Sometimes a park can be sentimental or offer activities for the kids, which are also very important to consider.

There are two collections of portraits below. The first collection are all portraits taken in the fall. The colors are obviously autumn toned, rich and saturated with browns and reds. A couple of the portraits were also taken at golden hour, the hour before sunset, and that contributes even more drama to the golden hues mixed within the crispy orange leaves. Black and white portraits from these session translate to darker and more dramatic contrast full of different textures and tones. I love fall portraits – they are one of my favorites to photograph. Besides the look of the final photograph, I love the crisp air, the sounds of the crunchy leaves and children throwing them from pile to pile.
Angelsea Urban - East Coast Fine Art Lifestyle Family Portrait Photographer_1459

The second collection shown here are all portraits taken NOT in fall. It could be spring or summer, or even winter if there are evergreens. The green colors are very present and the time of day shown here is both morning and early afternoon. Portraits from these sessions are lighter in color, and the black and white portraits are very similar to the ones in the collection above. The greens turn to very dark grey and black and offer a lot of beauitiful contrast to the final photograph. There is no limit to the time of year one can have their family portraits captured. The camera knows no temperature, in fact, most of my family portraits were all taken during cold temps at the beach or park.

Kids LOVE to explore. I find that taking them to beaches and parks helps to perk their interest in activities they can do during our time together, and time with their families. It’s almost impossible for ANY child to be expected to “sit and smile” for their portraits and I don’t encourage them to do so. Portraits are so much more engaging when they have natural expressions and movements – even if they are guided by a photographer.

The Urban Family Film by Joni James

View More: http://daanestudios.pass.us/urban-family

On a chilly spring day at the shore, I got on the other side of the camera with my own family with “Family Film” creator Joni James of Maine. A woman who fiercely loves her own family, I knew my family would be in good hands behind her camera.

And as a client, it’s super exciting to get that sneak peek and then drool in anticipation for more. So of course, I got all teary seeing my own family through someone else’s eyes; cartwheeling and dodging waves and seeing our little doggie digging in the sand. It’s just us.

Thanks for visiting today and I hope you enjoy!
