Welcome to 31 Days to an Organized Life & Business! For the month of October I will be a participant in The Nester’s 31 days Writing Challenge. Taking some of my own advice and taking you along on my journey to a life reset. I’ll be sharing (and practicing) some tips on everything from bookkeeping, shopping, managing kids, intentional parenting, work from home mom syndrome, work/life balance, spiritual reset and more. Not because I am the expert in these fields, but because they have worked for me in the past, and I so badly need them to work again for me now.
When I say I need this reset I’m not even kidding. When I say I’ll be writing about it, I don’t mean, I’m going to talk about past advice or something that worked once for me 3 years ago. I mean I’m going to hit publish on this blog post, and then go and do what I am writing about today. That is all I can commit to for today. Which means, if you can relate to any of this, I invite you along on this 31 day journey. Watch me triumph or fail, but I’ll be here daily to give you updates. I’d love if you joined me, and keep me posted on your progress as well. There’s hope and support in community here.

Wow. Day 15. And what a journey it has been so far.
When I set out to join the 31 days of writing project, and chose “31 Days to an Organized Life & Business” I was honestly worried I wouldn’t have enough to write about. As it turns out, my personal reasons for participating in the project far outweighed just stretching my writing muscles. So OF COURSE I have plenty to write about, because all along this was my own journey to reset my life. And Lord knows there is plenty to do in 31 days. Maybe I should have called it 31 days to a Total Life Reset, but then again no one would google that.
So if you are just joining us… here’s a recap of stuff we have tackled so far:
Day 1: Reset Workspace
Day 2: Writing a Family Mission Statement
Day 3: Making time for Devotionals
Day 4: Family Responsibility Chart
Day 5: Personal Finance Tips
Day 6: Reset your Desktop
Day 7: 5 Ways to Stay productive (even when the sky is falling)
Day 8: Blogs you should be reading
Day 9: Tax Tips for 2015
Day 10: The REAL truth about Work/Life Balance
Day 11: no post – because I was practicing work/life balance
Day 12: no post – because I was practicing work/life balance
Day 13: no post – because I was practicing work/life balance
Day 14: Grace for today, and the forgetful blogger
Welcome to day 15: Easy Personal Financial Management
So if you have been here a little while you know I like to operate on a budget. Not because I am so regimented that I need to box myself in, but that I find it way easier to live life in the world of currency when I have already spent what I needed to on paper FIRST.
My problem with any of those monthly budgeting systems is just that: monthly. And life doesn’t operate on monthly. Life operates on a rolling basis. With a monthly budget, some months have 4 weeks, some 5. Some have 2 pay periods, some 3, and if you are self employed and payments are irregular, planning a “monthly” anything seems like a joke.
So here’s a piece of information that might shock everyone: My husband actually handles all of our household finances.
Whaaaaat? But I thought you were an accountant. I thought you were the business guru who did all things money and with the planning and what not? What would you let your husband handle that?
And in case you are wondering, yes, those are real actual statements I have heard in real life.
First – I don’t “let” my husband “handle” that. We are a team and we both contribute to our household management. Yes, I might be the natural candidate for financial management because it comes naturally to me, but we learned over the years that managing our household finances is a task that just works better for him, merely because he has the time and resources to manage it more effectively than I do. He has a desk job in a corporate environment with internet access on his lunch break Monday – Friday so it’s just easier for him pay and manage bills online.
Now, it’s more than just click and pay…. as he learned the first month he took over our bills. Because he was like – “Oh… mortgage is due on the 1st so I’ll go ahead a get that out of the way” and then he was scratching his head as to how the heck the other bills would be paid when our account just got wiped out.
So… enter the Easy Personal Financial Management System we came up with for him to be able to plan and deploy payments based on income and deposits.
Since “monthly” doesn’t work, I created this rolling spreadsheet that allows us to see the entire year (or forever if I program it far enough).
I input the the income in the designated spots and then instead of listing how much the monthly expense is, I apply it to the spot on the date it will be paid. Then the spreadsheet automatically calculates how much money we will have left over at the end of the pay period. If income is sporadic, we just decide on the draw amount that will come out of the business account as salary and apply that.
Just by plugging in numbers here and there – I can see that come Christmas time, we might come up short – so we can have time to plan for that. Or when a birthday comes up – we can pad the budget in that area to prepare. On the flip side, if we have an unexpected savings on a bill that is less than what we thought, or we earn more than we thought, we can make a simple adjustment and see now that Christmas is taken care of, even though it’s 3 months away.
So, yes, my husband handles the bills because we use this system. We both know exactly what is happening with our budget at any time. He simply deploys payments when necessary via online banking. If he starts to see red, he calls me and we figure it out.
So I created this system in Microsoft Excel, but in order for us both to have access to it, I uploaded it to Google Docs. It now works on the fly as a make shift custom mobile app! So if hubby calls with a question from work, I can easily log in and we can both be looking at the same thing to discuss. Easy peasy!
Because not everybody loves making excel spreadsheets as much as I do, I added this to the Toolbox so you don’t have to create your own from scratch. And of course for my blog readers, there’s giant discount for sticking with me on this journey. Use the code 31DaysPFEX to get 75% off this item for the next 48 hours!

Welcome to day 14: Grace for the forgetful blogger
If you have been keeping up with my 31 Days you may have noticed that there was umm… a few days that are just not here. Whoops. Well, I’m human what can I say. I was wondering how hard it would be to keep up with daily blogging and it turns out, it’s pretty darn hard.
Life happens.
I am a photographer and I was shooing an out of town wedding this past weekend. It was also my wedding anniversary so I roped hubby into coming to shoot with me and we’d make a weekend out it (even though I’d be working an 18 hour day, but whatever – we’d figure it out). I still didn’t think any of that would stop me. I thought – well, I’ll just have to preplan and get it all done because, I can do everything, obviously (insert sarcasm here). I had family coming in to help with my kids and I had it all figured out.
Only, things didn’t go as planned on Friday. Packing my gear, packing for the weekend, preparing the kids to be supervised by an out of town relative, and lo and behold, it’s Tuesday.
Being away from our kids is hard for us, but we know as a couple it’s important to nurture our marriage with high priority. So when our kids are going HOG WILD because they are just screaming for attention when we get home, the priority becomes them and everything else gets pushed aside.
The irony of it all, is that my last post was on Work/Life Balance, and as it turns out, I was unintentionally living that out as I ignored all of my responsibilities so I can hang out with my kids on their day off of school. Including my blog.
Organized by grace, living intentionally through faith, and doing our best in building a legacy of practical stewardship for our family.
Not every day goes as planned and not every plan goes out each day.
There are days when stuff just doesn’t happen. We can throw in the towel or we can try again and see it through.
So…. I’m still in it. And tomorrow you won’t want to miss…. Easy Personal Financial Management.

WELCOME TO DAY 10: The real truth about Work Life Balance for mothers
There is no such thing.
Show me a career minded mother who will equally measure her child as important as her job and I will issue a retraction with my apologies immediately.
They will never be equal on the sides of the scale. Ever. Or so I have learned.
She will want to choose her child every time.
The scales will therefore always be off balance. And we wonder why so many working mothers struggle with mom guilt. Because we are told we need to “find” balance. That taking on just the “correct” amount of work so won’t jeopardize our roles as mothers. That it if we only found the correct formula of how much we are allowed to work we would feel like the scales are equal on both sides and we can breathe easy at night, guilt free.
But she will always want to choose her family, every time. And so we need to give up the very idea of balance in order to be able to successfully and confidently walk out who we are meant to be as mothers and how enormously important that role is in the lives of the little ones entrusted to us.
Does this mean we are all called to be stay at home moms? No, not necessarily so. Sometimes mothers are called to inspire their child to seek the fullness of their potential, so they might see a mother living out the fullness of hers. Other times it’s a role of a caretaker in the home, the nurturer. Sometimes mothers are also additional financial providers so their husbands can also be present in the home, and involved in the daily parenting. She could also hold an important role of being the support of her husband, while he walks out the calling for both of them, holding his arms up so he can reach HIS fullest potential.
I also firmly believe that God has entrusted people with gifts and skills and they are meant to be used in a vocation or ministry and sometimes this means working outside the home, or working from home while also raising children.
We can strive and we can search for answers on what that “correct” formula is to keep the scale even, or we can just accept and embrace the fact that we will always want to choose our family first and that will tip the scales off balance, permanently.
The real truth is that there is no balance. And the day that I am in balance in this scenario is when I need to stop and reevaluate my priorities.
Does this mean I can’t work? No, of course not.
Does this mean I have to only work part time or fewer hours. No, not necessarily. Those are details of a bigger picture.
I don’t know what that answer is for you, but for me I think it has to do more with goals and achievements and mental space more than physical time and future appointments. That I may not have my calendar fully booked as much as I think it should be, but that those unexpected time off gave me a chance to have an impromptu heart to heart with my daughter. These things are not always happenstance. That sometimes I will need to say no to things I would otherwise want to say yes to. And that giving my life more white space allows me the fullness to explore areas that are un-planable – which is probably not even a word.
Those decisions are hard for me. Super hard. I know what choosing no looks like. The business side of me fights me every time I choose no because it just doesn’t make sense. And it doesn’t, and that’s when we need to trust in faith that the white space needs to be there for a reason. And we often don’t know the reasons until WAY after that space is created. Attempting to concentrate less on me and my own goals or achievements to allow more of Him.
Sometimes we just need to simply get out of our own way and allow God the space to work through our lives. To operate in the manner that He designed.
For some time I have known this deep down, but always had a hard time reconciling it to the daily grind and hustle of the industries I am in and the life that I am living. It’s difficult seeking guidance on something you don’t even realize you are chasing after.
Enter the beautiful soul of Elizabeth Langford. A talented photographer, wise entrepreneur, wife, mother, and wonderfully influential godly friend. She has been on a crazy adventure of her own launching new businesses and tending to her own family. During one of her latest adventures, she filmed this simple, yet beautifully moving story of Balance, the butterfly, and her journey in trying to catch it.
I was so moved by the look on her sweet daughter’s face imagining how impactful this moment must have been for her while her mom read her this story. Knowing that Mommy just choose her, and how incredibly secure she must have felt then. I bet she doesn’t even realize how incredible that promise was, but one I know she will receive the full benefits of when her and her mama walk hand in hand in this life.
This visual representation of chasing this butterfly represented so much of my own life, and finally there was a reconciliation that my mind could wrap around how I have felt.
That trying to chase after balance would be impossible. Because I will always want to choose my family.
As if we need permission to make that choice.
With Elizabeth’s permission to share, I invite you take a closer look at what balance could look like for you, the working mother who may be struggling trying to chase it.
Thanks for visiting today!

Taxes. I know. It’s like a swear word nobody likes to talk about. I get it. I teach taxes to business owners and I prepare taxes for families and businesses. It’s not pretty. BUT, we live in America and like it or not it’s part of our existence.
Maybe last tax season you swore it would be different. Maybe you were relieved you just dodged a bullet and happily spending your refund on a much needed warm vacation, or maybe you were left spinning in confusion on what just happened and WHY the heck you owe so much money?
Don’t like the feeling of dreading tax season because you have NO IDEA on what is going to happen?
Here are 3 things to implement right now to be better prepared for next seasons’s tax return:
1. Get a Mileage Log
This may seem obvious, but as a photographer you are likely driving EVERYWHERE for business. Without a spreadsheet, log or app, this can make next tax season a nightmare compiling receipts – or worse – you are guessing on how much you think it is. This is a TOP RED FLAG for the IRS when picking apart your tax return. WHY? Because it gives you a LOT of money back in your pocket. It’s not too late to recreate and retrace your steps from January until now and implement an organized system for this year. Don’t wait until April 10th or your accountant may rush through your tax return quickly, and you’ll end up owing more than necessary because they didn’t have time to think about ways they could be saving you money on your return. Just like being kind to your waiter gets you fresh food, being kind to your tax preparer gets you more thorough service. Sadly. it happens all the time. They have to rush when necessary when people wait until the last minute and YES, that does affect the level of service you are able to receive.
Here are some links to tools you may want to consider: Mileage Log or Mileage App
2. Consult a Financial Advisor or Business Manager.
If you paid a wallop this year and are angry at your tax preparer for not warning you, don’t be. Tax preparers are paid to prepare the package of data you submit to them at the end of the year. That’s it. If you consider them your Financial Advisor and are expecting them to give you extraordinary business advice throughout the year, and they don’t, please don’t be disappointed. They are there throughout the year to answer questions pertaining to your tax return. If you would like advice on ways to increase revenue, or reduce costs, or tax liability, that role falls under a Financial Manager or Advisor, not a tax preparer. A good tax preparer will give you advice pertaining to your taxes. A great one will give you advice on your business operations, and a rare gem will give you tips and tricks on how to reduce liability and increase revenue. (Although this person would be grossly underpaid for this service as a “tax preparer” and likely move on to be an Advisor or Business Manager). Consult an Advisor or Business Manager if you would like to be more prepared in the financial operations and planning of your business.
3. Set up a SEP IRA Account
Yes, your spouse might have a great 401k program and that is wonderful. Continue to do that. But if you find yourself owing Uncle Sam thousands of dollars at the end of the year, better to stick some of that money back in your own pocket for retirement, then fork it over to the government as a straight tax payment you’ll never see again. You can do this through a Financial Advisor, Stock Manager or on your own through sites like Fidelity. It will save you THOUSANDS.
You still have time to get organized for this year! It’s not too late at all! Your business will thank you for it!
