10 Reasons why I quit my blog and stopped writing // Angelsea Urban

1. The 31 days Challenge

It was a simple challenge to encourage writers to write. My husband tells me all the time – the more you write – the easier it is to write. So I signed up and proceeded to find my groove in writing a daily piece on “31 Days to an Organized Life and Business.” I did enjoy writing it, and, like my husband said, it got easier and easier to let my finger go a-flying and finding my voice as a writer again.

But then…. Life. I was so busy living my life, that I hardly had much time to write about it. But, more importantly, I didn’t have enough time to reflect on it – in order to write something meaningful about it worthy of internet readers. Personal writing is such an intense personal thing for me, so I am not just one of those people that can churn out a bunch of words, without first tapping into a deeper emotional place – and – it takes a while to get there. So… 31 days of writing (ok so I skipped some here and there) but after 31 days… I was happen when #2 happened and I was grateful for a break.

2Tara broke my blog.

So one day, this gorgeous couple’s NYC portrait session was featured on the blog and they literally broke the Internet. I learned that I apparently have a limit on how much traffic I can have pushing through the site and when I have reached that limit for the day, it shuts it down. Well… much to our surprise, it reached the limit in 20 minutes. And so the company was able to reset it for me. And then it reach the limit again. Again reset. And then by the 3 time it reached the limit, my hosting company said, sorry, we just cannot handle the load that your site is experiencing. And so… we had to high tail it and migrate to an entirely different server and hosting company.

Friends…. This is no small feat. Moving a blog is like selling your house and then moving to a new house – unpacking and setting up shop again. This set us back a solid month. And by then, we were knee deep in preparations for #3

3. Exuma Missions Trip.

I can’t even put the words together yet regarding the experience this was for our family. 5 months later and we are still processing all that God did on that trip. Someday the words will come. Until then, I invite you to see our team on the trip, or learn more about the island by watching the videos below. Or search Instagram for #urbansonmission

4. Inspire Retreat

Is exactly what is says. A retreat for creatives to be inspired in Portland, Maine. I had the amazing opportunity to be invited to this retreat through the company I use to host my website, Showit (read: NOT my blog- because #1 above). They asked me to come along and represent them to the community in the North East Coast and what an amazing blessing that was. 4 days with a bunch of artists getting our hands dirty and digging deep internally to come back renewed and inspired. And I was – totally. Thank you to Elizabeth Langford and Showit for the opportunity to represent Showit and attend an amazing event. I was even able to visit some of my favorite people. If you click on Inspire’s link you can play Where’s Waldo and try to find me in that group photo. 🙂

5. Virginia

The traveling didn’t stop in Maine. The next weekend the family was in Virginia visiting our dear friends, The Daane Family. Yes January & February were just kind of a blur – in the best way. We were privileged to bring some Maine snow to Virginia and they got an epic (for them) snowstorm during our visit. The kids (and grownups) had a wonderful visit – and we managed to throw a surprise traveling baby shower and a number of out of town mutual friends surprised Beth with a mini-shower. Eventually I will get caught up on blogging my photography sessions for the past 6 months. Yikes. But here’s one of Beth from her maternity session.

6. Tax Season

Womp womp. Yes… one of my hats is a Certified Tax Preparer and people have grown to love me and hate me for this. My clients and I rolled up our sleeves and got through this season without a scratch. Glory be.

7. Maryland & DC

It was the season of travel for the Urbans. And it continued down to Maryland, and Washington DC where we visited our nation’s capital and of course, the cherry blossom trees. It was a fun time for the kids who got to spend time with their out of town friends. I was starting to feel like someone needed to pinch me because I was able to spend so much time with dear friends from across the miles that I don’t get to see too often.

8. Ocean City

The fun continued when a friend said, “wouldn’t it be fun to get a bunch of friends together and go to my family’s house at the shore?”

Friends. I live “at the shore”. I know what this means. It usually means that your family has a 1950s bungalow near where we might find parking that is near to where we can walk further to the actual ocean. I mean – in any case – I live at the shore for a reason… we love it here. I love it more surrounded by amazing friends and I would love nothing more than to be able to spend quality time with them – wherever that may be.

But when your friend fails to mention – until you show up at the address given – that the “family house” is actually a 9 bedroom mansion – oceanfront – like ON THE SAND – suddenly you realize your gratefulness for not thinking twice about spending the weekend in a cramped 1950s bungalow with your girlfriends. That you would have done that too. Hands down, because it’s the people that matter the most.

9. VEGAS

And then there was Vegas. VEGAS – the actual Las Vegas. This one was all Steve’s fault. His company was sending him for a business trip to connect with some people and learn about “insert Charlie Brown mumbled dialogue here”. Not that I don’t understand what my husband’s job is – I do… but VEGAS… so I hitched a ride and tagged along. Steve went to the office during the day, I people watched at Fake Paris poolside while editing photos and sending emails. It’s not a bad way to live at all. We had a fabulous time, saw an amazing show, enjoyed the warm weather, stunning desert landscape and pseudo cultural experiences from visiting all of the themed hotels. It was like the countries of Epcot. Only Vegas. And HUGE.

10. Camping Club 46

We just wrapped up the epic first half of the year with the 4th – 6th graders (and their younger siblings) from our church on a camping/missions trip. We traveled up to the Word of Life camp in Upstate NY to clean up the camp, and prepare it for their upcoming ministry season. Yes it was real camping because there was an actual spider in my bed. On my pillow to be exact. But these kids…. so worth it. 🙂

New Jersey Family Portrait Photographer Angelsea Urban Jersey Shore Childrens Portraits_1794

Please note: We, like many people, used to wear busy as a badge of honor. That life was full and meaningful if our calendars were packed and our work kept us at a frantic pace. I hated that life. I was there years ago and even had to schedule our “day to be spontaneous” a month in advance. It was sad. My love language is quality time; undivided attention to one thing at a time. And I felt like my attention was always split between too many things. And in trying to do too many things, the quality was filtered down.

While the 10 things above may seem on the outside to look “busy” I have never been more focused and slower paced in my life. My quality time tank is overflowing and the memories we have made as a family, and individually will last forever and continue to shape me.

So, it’s not that I haven’t had time to write. I was just too busy enjoying making new memories that I didn’t want to stop to record them. I quit writing, but not intentionally.

But writing is like a muscle. If you don’t use it, you lose it. And I have been stuck in my head for too long now afraid to let the fingers go a-flying again. Lately I have been feeling the nudge again to dust off the keyboard and get back to writing again. To share all of these things that have been going on in my life and to encourage those who want to do the same. The good, the bad, and the ugly and the pretty.

So… here’s to a new day, a new commitment, and to getting back on the horse and checking fear at the door!

Thanks for stopping by and catching up with me today! Anybody have something they need to recommit to today?

XOXO,
Angie

Central Park NYC Portrait Photography // Redefining the Family Portrait Experience // Angelsea Urban // Tara and Ben Peddicord

Every chapter of a love story deserves its sacred place in time. The first one, the second, the 7th, the 18th….. numbers are milestones yes, but they are also just a number. Every chapter is important. Every day is sweet. Everyday deserves celebration. Tara and Ben did just that on a cold day in Central Park New York, New York celebrating life and love.

Tara and Ben are one of the sweetest couples ever. Together since childhood, having been through it all through thick and thin, and now building a new home too (you can check out their home building adventure – along with Tara’s beautiful photography here). Steve and I had a blast getting to spend the day with these two as we hit some of our favorite quintessential New York City Spots. Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, and Bryant Park.

As a business owner, it’s not always that I get to do whatever the heck I want in a commissioned portrait session. It’s important to be consistent in the work that you show so potential clients can get an idea of what to expect for their own portraits and their own experience when working with me. It’s just good general business practice. Most of my portrait sessions are relationship focused with a heavy concentration on the family dynamic and the special bonds that exist between them. Showcasing their life and love and preserving their family relationships through a unique portrait experience.

While we still had a heavy concentration on Tara & Ben’s relationship in this portrait session, we brought NYC to center stage as well. Artistically I had a lot of fun with this and it wouldn’t have been possible without their full support. Trusting me to do whatever the heck I wanted not knowing in advance what the outcome might be, especially with swarms of people in every direction. Being so patient as I meticulously positioned them around blocking this or that.  Not to mention it was totally freezing and windy and Tara was in a GOWN… a gown and was totally a trooper who deserves a medal just for that. Needless to say, it was a treat for me to be able to create these special portraits for two dear friends.

Please enjoy a few of my personal favorites from our time together.

Thanks for visiting today!

31 Days Project // Day 24 // Writing off Travel Expenses

Welcome to 31 Days to an Organized Life & Business! For the month of October I will be a participant in The Nester’s 31 days Writing Challenge. Taking some of my own advice and taking you along on my journey to a life reset. I’ll be sharing (and practicing) some tips on everything from bookkeeping, shopping, managing kids, intentional parenting, work from home mom syndrome, work/life balance, spiritual reset and more. Not because I am the expert in these fields, but because they have worked for me in the past, and I so badly need them to work again for me now.

When I say I need this reset I’m not even kidding. When I say I’ll be writing about it, I don’t mean, I’m going to talk about past advice or something that worked once for me 3 years ago. I mean I’m going to hit publish on this blog post, and then go and do what I am writing about today.  That is all I can commit to for today. Which means, if you can relate to any of this, I invite you along on this 31 day journey. Watch me triumph or fail, but I’ll be here daily to give you updates. I’d love if you joined me, and keep me posted on your progress as well. There’s hope and support in community here.

If you missed Day 1, or would like to catch up on any other day, click the link on the right hand side or right here.

Be sure to also follow along on Instagram as I post updates throughout the day. #31daystoreset @Angelsea Urban

Welcome to Day 24: Writing off Travel Expenses

There has been a lot of debate lately about the ability to deduct travel costs for out of town work assignments on your Federal and State Income Taxes.

Surprisingly, most people are under the impression that if they book an event out of town, they can plan a vacation around it, and take a significant tax deduction on the entire trip.

This is not necessarily the case.

To quote directly from nolo.com:

If you travel overnight for business, you can deduct your airfare, accommodations, rental cars, and other travel expenses. Economy is not an issue for the IRS — you may fully deduct your costs, even if you stay at four-star hotels and enjoy the comforts of a first-class cabin.

However, most people do not travel to a distant city and spend every waking moment working — time may also be spent seeing the sights and visiting friends. The IRS has created a set of rules delineating what costs are deductible and how much of a trip must be business-related in order to deduct its costs. These rules depend on where you travel and how long you stay.

If you travel within the United States, transportation costs (air and cab fare, for example) are deductible as long as you spend at least half of your trip on business — for example, buying merchandise or meeting with manufacturers. On days when you are carrying out business, you may also deduct your “destination” expenses, such as hotel costs, 50% of your meal expenses (see below for more on this 50% rule), local transportation (including car rental), and telephone charges.

On days when you are not working, destination costs cannot be deducted. Similarly, the costs related to a spouse or other companion accompanying you cannot be deducted unless that person is your employee and is traveling for a reason genuinely related to your business.

If you travel outside the United States, the rules depend on the length of your trip. If your trip is shorter than seven days, you can deduct your transportation costs and the destination expenses for days you spend working. If your trip lasts more than seven days and you spend more than 75% of your time on business — for example, you spend eight of ten days at a business conference — the same rules apply. However, if you spend between 50% and 75% of your time on business, you may deduct only the business percentage of your transportation costs (you can still deduct destination costs for the days you spend working). And if you spend less than 50% of your time working, none of your costs are deductible.

Although these rules may already seem complicated, there are many more that are too detailed to cover here. Because there has been a lot of taxpayer abuse, the IRS has really gone to town in imposing restrictions on travel deductions. As a result, there are special rules for cruises, conventions, side trips, and more. For all the details, read IRS Publication 463, Travel, Entertainment, Gift, and Car Expenses.

by: Rich Stim, Attorney

What does that mean in English? (Disclaimer: Contact your tax accountant and ask them about your unique situation.)

See if the trip you just booked would qualify as a business expense before you go hog wild on Mai Tais and scooter rentals. Just because you are at an event that sounds like “work” doesn’t mean your 10-day vacation built around it will be money in your pocket. Sometimes it does work out that way, but sometimes it doesn’t. Confirming your situation and travel schedule is key.

If you have made this mistake in the past, fear not.

What happens if you deducted more than you should? What is your actual risk?

If you accidentally deducted a $10,000 European Vacation. As a wedding photographer you were commissioned to photograph a wedding in Italy, and then decided to bring your whole family along for a 10 day adventure.  You spent 1 day, of your 10 days photographing the wedding, and the rest of your time on vacation in Italy.

What would happen (in the event of an audit)?

The $10,000 that you deducted, gets re-added to your income and your taxes are recalculated based on that amount. You will be assessed a penalty for underreporting your income (probably no more than 5% of the amount) and will be assessed interest on the difference in the amount you would have owed in taxes, but didn’t pay, because you underreported.

In this instance, you may be looking at a $500 penalty + interest (depending on how many years back the IRS is reporting you) of a few hundred dollars. No, you will not go to jail for this, assuming this is your first time and that you deliberately were not trying to scam the government out of their share of your paycheck.

Surprisingly, the IRS is very accommodating. If you owe any amount of back taxes and are underwater with how to catch up, the IRS is usually willing to work out a payment plan in good faith. You can present your case with what you can legitimately afford to pay and in most cases, they accommodate you with little to no penalty at all. If you continue to make payments on time, there is no cause for concern or further recourse.

What are 3 ways you can be sure to stay organized with your business expenses?

  1. Have a separate payment method.

I usually recommend keeping a separate debit card for your business account so that each time you run to the post office, or staples for printer paper, you can ring up a separate transaction for business expenses. If you do NOTHING MORE other than use a separate card for all things business, it is so much easier at the end of the year to filter through.

  1. Keeping up with your books.

We talked about finding a method that works for you, but really, it’s as easy as finding a method that works for you. Maybe it’s a shoe box that you stuff your receipts in and then dump it into a spreadsheet, but whatever your system is, keeping up with it regularly will help you to be able to review it and make better business decisions.

What if you suddenly realized that you are paying through the roof in lab fees? Maybe it’s time to reconsider who you are using and save on costs. How will you know this, if you cannot review it.

  1. Consider outsourcing your bookkeeping.

With so many things available to be outsourced, if your honestly can’t be bothered with it, seriously consider hiring someone to manage it for you. You will be surprised how inexpensive it is compared to what you may be thinking.

And if your second thought is…. “but they can’t see how messy and unorganized I am” believe me when I tell you…

If you were perfectly prepared, then there would NOT be bookkeepers in the world.

They. Have. Seen. Worse. Than. Yours……. Guaranteed.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to one near you and start the conversation of what life would look like if you outsourced this area of your business.

And the next time you are out to dinner with your spouse, talking about business strategies, marketing or how to cut costs, be sure to save that receipt and use your “other” debit card, because THAT totally counts! 😉

Thanks for visiting today!

Welcome to Day 23: Developing a Business Strategy that suits your Lifestyle for Creative Business Owners

I have one of these. I am one of these. I totally get it. The words “Business Management” may not even be on your radar. But it totally needs to be. Without the proper business management systems in place, you might find yourself hating your camera, your paintbrush, your cupcakes, your accessories, fill in the blank. Running a creative business, as a creative, is difficult to navigate. It is difficult to turn a profit in a creative business. Taxes, Profit & Loss statements, licenses, insurances –   these are all making your eye twitch just reading them aren’t they? How much do you charge for your services? What should your packages be set up to be? How do you know when you are spending too much in one area?

Not to mention… you are a creative… which means… the lifestyle you innately desire does not revolve around spreadsheets and number crunching. Your radar most likely consists of when you get to create next. What will the glorious light look like in that field at sunset? How quickly can you get to a pen or a keyboard because the words are pouring out of you? What flavors can you combine today? What music moved you this morning? The amazing conversation you had with your child as you explored the forest on a nature hike.

If you are attempting to earn a living using your creative gifts as a business owner, it is absolutely necessary to put a little bit of attention to the business model area of your life. Similarly how we talked about “Lara” and the fact that I simply just can’t tell her to sit at her desk Monday, Wednesday and Friday to do her bookkeeping…. I would encourage you to take a good, hard look, at what you can do.

Let’s get 100% real for just a moment….

If you thought you would work on your business 40 hours a week, and for the past 6 months the reality has been that you can only bear to do “business” stuff maybe for 1 day a week, in between other stuff, then the reality is your are not building a business that will fit into your current lifestyle.

Something has to give.

Either you strap on the boots and go full force to 40 hours a week and actually do everything you said you needed to do to fulfill that business model…

OR….

You redevelop a realistic business plan that will allow you the freedom to put your priorities in order. That what matters most in your life, the thing that is really taking up all of your time during the week, to be the area where you continue to put all of your efforts into.

Maybe you are a mom. And you work on your business from home while you are raising your kids. Maybe some days you should be out marketing your business, but your son was sick and you felt it better to stay home and care for him.

Or maybe he wasn’t even sick. Maybe you looked over and saw that he had grown 3 inches since the last time you took a good, hard look, and suddenly you realize how precious life is, and that you just want to spend more time with your family.

But you still want to run a business. Just maybe not in the same way as when you first started out.

Back when you thought you had something to prove and now you’ve circled back and realize the only person you were competing against was yourself. You know now that you are enough, just as you are. Your business success does not define you, and maybe what once was a source of happiness, income and creativity, feels like a pressure cooker.

OR…

Maybe you have it in your gut to dream big and huge and give it all you’ve got until you’ve got nothing left to give. Your work is your stamp on this world, your legacy, and you’ve got the focus, determination and drive of an Olympic athletic fighting for their life. Nothing will stop you from reaching your goal. Nothing. You feel a great sense of accomplishment with each step you take, and the reward you receive doesn’t even matter, it knowing you did what you set out to do. Your creative soul cannot rest until you allow whatever is in you to get out onto the paper, canvas, music, camera, or whatever medium you use. Business schmizness… it’s not about that…. But you do it because it’s necessary.

I’m not here to tell which plan is right for you, or that there are only these two scenarios above.

My question to you today is…

What is your plan, your business model, and does it align with the lifestyle that matters most to you?

And ….. When was the last time you evaluated that?

If you need to step up your game, then set a tangible plan in motion to make that happen. Buckle down and make the sacrifices that you had been putting off. Gain the support you need from your family, or friends.

Put to paper all that is on your heart to take it to the next level. Break it down into small steps and tackle them one by one. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. You’ve got this. You really do. Just keep at it.

But….

If your lifestyle feels like your priorities are upside down, I challenge you today to set a plan in motion to change the course. Set yourself up for success to lead the life you promised yourself you would.

Stop telling yourself that Tomorrow will just be different because ____________. What about the last 6 months? The last year? The next year? What do you really want that to look like?

It’s okay not to have the answer you thought you would have. It really, really is.

If that means downshifting your business plan to make more time for family, then give yourself permission to do so. Create an Exit Strategy, a DownSize Plan, or Redefine your current Business Model to accommodate the Lifestyle that you are recommitting to. Take a step back and evaluate what matters most in your life, then create a list of 5 small steps that you can take right now to get you there. Start with 5 and take it from there.

Try to resist the temptation to just throw in the towel altogether. You were given these creative gifts for a reason. You don’t have to attach them to being a FULL TIME Business Owner. But you totally can create a business plan that works for your lifestyle.

The real one. In this season.

After that you can get right back to dreaming about design, landscapes, frosting, and paint colors. Frolicking in the fields of gold, maybe with your kids or maybe even retiring early with a successful saleable business.

I have been on both sides of this fence in my life, and I can say with certainty these are definitely NOT the only two choices either. I am happy to share my experience with anyone who asks, send me a message and we can totally chat.

If you are looking for some hands on detailed help, consider looking into it further here.

My hope is that you do give this some thought today. Even if it’s just for today. That this will plant a small seed in your heart to evaluate your plan, even if just to confirm your current one.

Thanks for visiting today!
