There is a quiz going around Facebook currently for children to answer questions about their parents. Unprompted. One of the questions was “What does your mom do for work?” As a person of many businesses and professional endeavors, I was curious about which trade my 7 year old son would choose to describe mine.

His answer: “She’s a photographer – but really she is on the computer all day.”

Of course. That answer makes sense. All of my studio and consulting sessions are scheduled for when he is at school. All other sessions are on location somewhere and he is not home. Most business projects are at my client’s sites, and then the rest really IS behind a computer.

Some days I am busy packaging up beautiful products for clients, some days I am at the beach looking for seashells with adorable families, and yes, some days (actually, a LOT of days) I am behind the computer putting it all together.

Years ago (before digital photography) days at the studio meant cutting negatives and putting them on crop cards to send out to the lab for printing. Assembling wood frames (from scratch). Retouching photos (with photo pigment and dyes) or and then spraying them with an aerosol gloss or lustre finish. It could mean assembling an album by mounting the photos with a heat press onto foam core or matte board.

It’s amazing how much of that is now accomplished behind a computer. Manufactures have made it too easy, too cost effective and their products too luxurious to be mounting and gluing and spraying anything for ourselves these days.

I do embrace technology and all it has to offer. Even if it means most of my “behind the scenes” days are behind a computer. I’ll take it!

Thrilled to share this little darling’s first birthday portraits! I had the pleasure of photographing her big brother’s first birthday portraits a few years ago and to see the similarities and differences between the two are so precious.

Addy is as pretty as they come and her sweet pearls and fancy tea party made all her bear guests blush.

Fun Facts, Inspiration, and What Fires Me Up // Angelsea Urban

Hello BFs! (Blog friends)… Since we have been apart for some time, I thought it was time to re-introduce myself in case you were curious how or why you happen to stumble across my little internet corner. Maybe a friend of yours was in a portrait I photographed? Or perhaps you stopped by for business advice or tax tips back in the day? Since we are having coffee dates once again, here are some fun facts, inspirations and curious tid bits you may not have known…

1. I’m actually really good with power tools. “Good” as in – I jackhammered my own concrete bathroom floor during a remodel on our old house. I also helped build the very large deck in our current house. Steve and I used to fight like cats and dogs trying to accomplish building projects, but now we are actually a really good team and can tackle pretty advanced projects if I do say so myself.

2. When I was 19 years old, a doctor told me I probably couldn’t have children. I didn’t like that answer. Or the word “probably”. I know everyone loves their kids. Like, LOVES their kids. But I like to believe I love mine a little extra. “Probably”.

3. I started dabbling in photography in high school but never considered leaving my “real” business job because of lack of security. When my son was born I finally had the guts to jump into business ownership and I launched two companies simultaneously with a newborn. A consulting firm and a photography business. Yes. The first years were kind of a blur. lol

4. I am often asked “what inspires you?” I’m never sure if they are asking about my artistic approach or why I continue running up this crazy mountain of business ownership. My artistic inspiration often changes with my personal life. But I think that is a common thing for most artists. I’ve often heard that if you lack inspiration you are lacking excitement in your life. I find that to be very true. I’m such an explorer at heart and when I’m not out in the world seeing new things, I am not in the mood to create anything. That includes any kind of creative projects not just photography.

Ultimately, my heart is to help nourish families in their relationships with each other. I pursue that professionally through meaningful portrait photography, business consulting and management for entrepreneurs, teaching practical stewardship and home management systems, and creating simple products and tools that maximize the quality of our lives on what matters most. Or it could even be just a conversation over coffee at my kitchen table. Or hosting a small group with church friends or going through a devotional book with girlfriends. That is what fires me up the most and inspires me to live life to the fullest and cherish my relationships.

5. My husband and I met in Chemistry class in high school. We started dating after I checked “yes” on a note he left me in my locker. And yes, I still have the note, along with many others in a book. I recently showed our kids for the first time. They were not impressed.

6. My daughter’s middle name is Grace. I choose it after hearing a sermon one Sunday morning. “Faith, Hope and Love are wonderful things, but only Grace will get you home.” I never wanted to forget the significance of God’s gift.

7. I loved to draw when I was younger but I was never very good at it. I picked up a camera and I was hooked. I still feel like a cheater sometimes. Like a camera is for artists who can’t paint or sketch. But I love the whole process. I started on film so photography began in a darkroom for me. The quiet moments of seeing your “art” appear right before your eyes. It was such a delayed gratification. You never knew if what you tried to create was going to work out. Until that moment, in the dark, in the quiet… it appears. I love the convenience of digital photography today, but I still appreciate the art of film and bust out my old Bronica medium format camera for fun.

It’s the last week of school here so we are wrapping up with tons of parties and actives and ramping up (or shall I say down) for summer! Is it just me, or does managing the homework folders feel like you are CEO of your children’s fortune 500 enterprise? Why so many papers?

Long Beach Island Maternity Portraits // Barnegat Studio Maternity Portraits // Angelsea Urban

I often hear mothers-to-be say they don’t feel lovely enough to be photographed during this time. That they feel uncomfortable, swollen, achy and just not pretty. Each time I hear it, I want to say, “I wish you could see what we all see. You are beautiful. And honestly, just stand there and you are already perfectly stunning.”

They have quickly become one of my favorite couples to photograph, “the Annapolis Peddicords” as we now lovingly refer to Tara and Ben. Blog reading friends might remember this couple from the NYC portraits we did last year, and behind the scenes Tara has become one of my dearest friends and favorite people. She is a talented wedding photographer based in Maryland and took the trek up to New Jersey to have her maternity portraits taken in both Long Beach Island and in my residential studio in Barnegat in this special double portrait session.

I’m so excited for Tara and Ben to become parents. These two are such amazing people, I can only imagine the amazing parents they will be.

Resting in His goodness and grace, with the sweetest of gifts. A new chapter awaits. Excited to share more of these portraits for this growing family and honored to be able to continue to document this next chapter in their lives.
